Choosing a global phone number involves more than just picking an area code. It requires understanding local accessibility, cost structures, and technical features. Below are the most frequent questions our customers ask when selecting their AVOXI numbers.
1. General Connectivity & Accessibility
What is the difference between a Local (DID) and a Toll-Free number?
A Local Virtual Number (DID) gives you a presence in a specific city (like London or Tokyo). Callers pay their standard local rate to reach you. A Toll-Free Number (like 800 or 0800) is free for the caller; your business pays for the inbound minute usage.
Best for Sales: Local DIDs (higher answer rates).
Best for Support: Toll-Free (removes barriers for customers).
What are "Landline-Only" numbers?
In some regions (especially Asia and LATAM), certain numbers are restricted to landline-to-landline traffic. This means they cannot be reached by a caller on a mobile phone.
Warning: If your customers are likely to call you from their smartphones, avoid landline-only ranges. Check our [Global Country Requirements] for specific country blocks.
Can I have one number that works in every country?
The closest option is a Universal International Freephone Number (UIFN). It is a single number (e.g., +800 XXXX XXXX) that can be registered in multiple participating countries. While convenient for branding, it involves a more complex registration process and setup fees per country.
2. Features & Outbound Capabilities
Can I use my AVOXI number for outbound calls (Caller ID)?
Yes, but this depends on the number type:
Local DIDs: Can almost always be used as a "Local Caller ID."
TrueLocal™: Our premium 2-way voice numbers specifically designed for high-reach outbound dialing.
Toll-Free: Generally cannot be used as a Caller ID for outbound calls, as many carriers block toll-free numbers from making outbound traffic to prevent spam.
Does my number support SMS?
SMS capability is country-dependent. Mobile Virtual Numbers are the most reliable for 2-way business texting. Most standard landline DIDs and Toll-Free numbers do not support SMS unless specifically noted in the product description.
3. Billing & Costs
Why is there a difference between International (ITFS) and Domestic Toll-Free (DTF)?
ITFS: Great for companies based outside the country they are targeting. It is easy to set up but sometimes has mobile-access restrictions.
DTF: Requires a "Local Presence" (business registration in that country) but offers the best possible mobile connectivity and often lower per-minute rates.
What is a "Shared Cost" number?
Common in the UK (0845/0870) and Australia (1300), these numbers split the cost between you and the caller. The caller pays a small fee, and you pay a lower per-minute rate than a standard 800 number. They are excellent for national coverage without the high cost of a full toll-free line.
4. Activation & Compliance
Why do I need to submit documents for a virtual number?
Many governments (like Germany, Japan, and Hong Kong) require "Know Your Customer" (KYC) documentation to prevent fraud. This usually includes a business license or proof of address.
See our [Global Regulatory Documents Guide] for a full breakdown of how we secure and store your information.
How long does it take to activate my number?
In-Stock Numbers: Often instant or within 24 hours (after account verfication).
Specialty/Regulated Numbers: Can take 3–10 business days depending on the speed of local carrier verification.
Porting: Transferring an existing number typically takes 2–4 weeks depending on your current provider.
